In modern engines, cast iron connecting rods, camshafts, and crankshafts are not as common as they once were. Many modern engines use lighter and stronger materials such as forged steel, aluminum, or even titanium for these components. These materials offer improved performance, reduced weight, and increased durability compared to cast iron. However, some lower-performance or budget-friendly engines may still use cast iron for these components. Overall, the use of cast iron for connecting rods, camshafts, and crankshafts in modern engines has become less standard. **

While cast gray iron connecting rods, camshafts, and crankshafts were commonly used in older engines, modern engines have shifted towards using lighter and stronger materials such as forged steel, aluminum, or even titanium. These materials offer improved performance, durability, and efficiency compared to cast gray iron components. However, cast gray iron may still be used in some specific applications where cost-effectiveness and adequate strength are the primary considerations. **

No, it is not common practice for camshafts to run directly in the aluminum cylinder head without special bearing shells. Camshafts typically have bearing journals that require bearing shells to reduce friction and wear. The use of bearing shells also allows for easier replacement and maintenance of the camshaft. Running the camshaft directly in the aluminum cylinder head without bearing shells would lead to increased friction, wear, and potential damage to the cylinder head. **
